Lexar has introduced a new solid-state drive (SSD) designed specifically with PlayStation 5 users in mind, featuring a case design that visually mirrors Sony’s gaming console and plug-and-play compatibility. The Play 2280 SE is positioned as a high-performance PCIe 4.0 storage upgrade, capable of handling large game libraries while maintaining thermal efficiency.

“Lexar asserts that its latest SSD is so perfect for the PlayStation 5 that it even looks like the console it is supposed to be a part of,” the company said in its product description, highlighting the device’s cosmetic and technical alignment with Sony’s system.

The Play 2280 SE is rated with sequential read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and write speeds of 6,000MB/s — slightly below the original Play 2280’s peak read and write performance, which reached 7,400MB/s and 6,500MB/s respectively. Despite the minor downgrade in raw speed, the SE variant retains its integrated heat sink and compatibility with PS5 storage standards.

Lexar claims the SSD can support storage for up to 100 AAA-rated games, providing what it describes as a “seamless” experience for gamers using the drive with a PlayStation 5. The device is marketed as a simple, no-reformat upgrade, allowing users to expand storage without uninstalling or transferring existing game files.

The 4TB version of the Play 2280 SE is currently priced at $224.99 in the United States, available exclusively through Costco’s online store. For comparison, the original 2280 with higher transfer speeds is still available at $249.59 for the same capacity.

The launch underscores Lexar’s growing presence in the gaming storage segment, as SSD manufacturers continue to tailor products for console-specific use cases amid increasing demand for fast and efficient game data management.
