Nintendo has cautioned users of its Switch and upcoming Switch 2 consoles to avoid operating the devices in high-temperature environments, as Japan continues to face record-breaking summer heat. The company outlined a maximum recommended operating temperature of 35°C, noting that excessive heat may lead to performance issues or potential hardware damage.

The advisory, issued through the company’s official support channel, comes amid growing concerns over the impact of extreme weather on portable electronics. With the Switch’s hybrid design encouraging both indoor and outdoor play, heat exposure has become a point of concern for long gaming sessions, especially in direct sunlight or poorly ventilated areas.

While overheating warnings are common in mobile and computing devices, Nintendo’s guidance reinforces the need for caution as rising temperatures become more frequent across the globe. Prolonged exposure to heat can cause devices to throttle performance or shut down unexpectedly to protect internal components.

The company did not announce any hardware updates or design modifications in response to climate concerns, instead relying on user awareness and behavioral adjustments. It suggested avoiding gameplay in direct sun or storing the console in hot locations, such as inside cars or near windows.

Nintendo’s warning reflects a broader shift among tech companies responding to climate-related challenges. With handheld devices expected to function reliably in a variety of settings, manufacturers are increasingly emphasizing safe usage practices during periods of intense heat.
