Meta is preparing to showcase two new virtual reality headset prototypes at SIGGRAPH 2025 in Vancouver, offering a glimpse into the company’s future hardware ambitions. The devices, codenamed Tiramisu and Boba 3, take two very different approaches to advancing VR technology.

The Tiramisu: Hyperrealistic VR headset prioritises visual fidelity over other design factors. Meta says it delivers “roughly 3x contrast, 3.6x pixels per degree, and up to 14x brightness compared to that of the Quest 3,” producing what it calls “above retinal resolution,” or detail beyond the human eye’s natural acuity. Equipped with dual high-resolution micro-OLED panels, the device is bulkier than consumer models and offers a limited 33-by-33-inch field of view. Its demanding visuals require Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS 3) to run an Unreal Engine 5 demo.

The Boba 3, meanwhile, focuses on expanding immersion through a much broader perspective — a 180-degree horizontal and 120-degree vertical field of view, up from the Quest 3’s 110 and 96 degrees. It offers a modest bump in resolution to 30 pixels per degree and uses similar lens technology to Meta’s current headset. Its lighter build suggests it could be closer to market readiness.

Both headsets will be shown during the conference, with Tiramisu debuting on August 11 and Boba 3 on August 14. Meta has not indicated when either could launch commercially, though the company’s own assessment points to Boba 3 as the more viable short-term product while Tiramisu serves as a technology showcase.
