Genshin Impact will stop receiving updates on Sony’s PlayStation 4, a move that could mark the start of a wider transition away from the last-generation console for online and live service games, according to a Games Industry report.

Developer HoYoverse cited the PS4’s aging hardware as the reason for ending support, pointing to slower loading and installation times compared with the PlayStation 5’s solid-state drive. The open-world role-playing game will continue to be available on PC and mobile devices, with cross-platform progression allowing players to transfer their progress to other systems.

“Many other operators of major online and live service titles [are] also eyeing up the timeline for dropping PS4 support,” Games Industry’s Rob Fahey wrote, suggesting that HoYoverse’s decision could be an early sign of a broader industry shift.

The PS4, released in 2013, still has a significant player base, though Sony confirmed in June 2025 that PS5 owners now outnumber PS4 users. In some markets, higher console prices compared with the 2020 launch have slowed adoption of the newer hardware.

Other live service games, including Battlefield 6 and MLB The Show, have already moved to PS5-only updates, reflecting a gradual industry move toward current-generation platforms.
