A global survey by OpenText and the Ponemon Institute has found that enterprises are prioritizing artificial intelligence but remain unprepared to deploy it securely due to gaps in information readiness.

The study of nearly 1,900 IT and security leaders across six countries reported that 73% view reducing information complexity as essential for AI adoption. Unstructured data was identified as a major source of difficulty, contributing to risks in both governance and security.

While 57% of respondents ranked AI adoption as a top priority and 54% expressed confidence in demonstrating return on investment, more than half said it was very difficult to address the legal and security risks associated with AI. Only 47% reported that IT and security goals were aligned with AI strategy.

Generative AI adoption is accelerating, with 32% of organizations already using it and another 26% planning to adopt within six months. By contrast, only 19% had implemented agentic AI, and just under a third considered it highly important to their business strategy.

The report suggested that organizations can improve readiness by strengthening encryption, implementing responsible AI practices, and tightening controls over sensitive data. It also noted that information management is becoming central to balancing innovation with trust as enterprises expand their use of AI.
