Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 has set new records on Xbox, outselling its original PlayStation release despite arriving more than a year later.
According to data from Alinea Analytics, the title sold 926,000 copies on Xbox within six days of its Aug. 26 release, compared with 633,000 units sold during the same period on PlayStation 5 after its February 2024 debut. The figures mark a near 50% stronger performance on Microsoft’s platform.
The launch coincided with Gears of War: Reloaded arriving on PlayStation, part of a rare exchange of first-party exclusives between the rival platforms. While Gears sold 259,000 copies in its first six days on Sony’s console, Helldivers 2 quickly rose to the top of Xbox’s paid games list, with its Standard Edition taking first place and its premium Super Citizen Edition ranking third.
The game also recorded 500,690 concurrent players across all platforms following its Xbox release, with Steam alone reaching a peak of 167,795 – the highest in the game’s history. Arrowhead credited Sony for assisting with the port. “Send their thanks to Sony since the port was ‘all PlayStation,’” Chief Executive Johan Pilestedt said.
Since its launch, Helldivers 2 has sold an estimated 18 million copies worldwide, including 12 million on PC, 5 million on PlayStation 5, and close to 1 million on Xbox. It remains PlayStation’s fastest-selling game to date, surpassing God of War: Ragnarök’s launch record.
