“Fear Effect,” a cult action-adventure game first released on the original PlayStation in 2000, has been reintroduced to players with a surprise PC launch nearly 25 years later.

The reboot, developed by Implicit Conversions and published by Limited Run Games, was released on Steam on Aug. 29 without prior announcement. Priced at about $10, the game has already received a 90% positive rating from early users.

Originally developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive, “Fear Effect” became known for its cel-shaded visuals and use of “Motion FX” technology, which allowed characters to move against dynamic video backdrops. Its cinematic style and seamless transitions between gameplay and cutscenes helped the title develop a cult following.

“The original Motion FX technology also returns, preserving the game’s unique visual style,” the developers said in a statement. The PC release adds new features, including 31 unlockable achievements, Steam Cloud support and full controller compatibility. Players can also expect a remastered soundtrack by Matt Furniss and Jason Agolia, along with full English voice acting.

While the game has been praised by early players, there is no introductory discount on Steam. Playtime is estimated between seven and nine hours, though Steam Deck compatibility remains listed as “Unknown.”

The revival highlights growing interest in modern reissues of classic titles, as publishers tap into nostalgia while expanding their libraries on digital platforms.
