Future of Insomniac’s Venom Game Uncertain After 2023 Data Breach

Marvel’s Venom, a long-rumored spin-off for the PlayStation 5, continues to face uncertainty nearly two years after it was revealed in a major data breach at Insomniac Games in late 2023. The leak exposed 1.7 terabytes of internal documents, including early concept art, story outlines, and a provisional 2025 release window.

The stolen files suggested the game was in pre-production, designed as a darker counterpart to Spider-Man and potentially featuring Eddie Brock as the new Venom. The project has not received an official update from Sony or Insomniac as of September 2025, leaving its status unclear.

Venom is interesting because from what I know

    • Combat system was completed
    • traversal system was completed
    • story was essentially smoothed out
    • even Mocap and lines from Tony Todd were recorded

But the game is also small enough where due to the breach it could have… https://t.co/Asql8HOTHZ pic.twitter.com/dQPL1xoZBL

Industry insider That REDACTED Guy claimed earlier this month that significant progress had been made before the breach. “The combat system was completed, the traversal system was completed, the story was essentially smoothed out, and even mo-cap and lines from Tony Todd were recorded,” he said, referring to the actor who voiced Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

However, the same source warned that the relatively small scope of the project could have left it vulnerable to cancellation. He noted it was “small enough where, due to the breach, it could have been scrapped,” raising concerns that exposed materials might have pushed PlayStation and Insomniac to halt development.

Conflicting reports surfaced in July suggesting the title may have been delayed rather than canceled, with its release possibly moved to 2026 amid broader scheduling adjustments at Insomniac. Rumors now point to a potential reveal later this month, alongside other projects including Wolverine, Saros, and a new God of War installment, at a possible State of Play event.
