Sega and its Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio revealed new details on two upcoming titles, the New Virtua Fighter Project and Stranger Than Heaven, during presentations at Tokyo Game Show 2025 and RGG Direct Summit. Despite rising fan anticipation, neither game has been given a release date.
At Tokyo Game Show, Sega shared a teaser trailer for the New Virtua Fighter Project, highlighting combat mechanics and new gameplay systems. The title will feature both traditional rules, modeled after earlier installments, and a new set called Uprising rules. These introduce Break and Rush, Flow Guard, and Stunner and Stun Combo systems aimed at modernizing the franchise while maintaining its identity.
Break and Rush will allow targeted attacks on an opponent’s body that create vulnerability in subsequent rounds. Stunner and Stun Combo are designed to deliver smoother exchanges without complex inputs, while Flow Guard integrates counterplay into the Break and Rush system. Sega said these features are intended to add depth and realism to battles. “The match is given to the first player to win three rounds,” Sega noted when outlining the updated rules.
Meanwhile, RGG Studio provided a behind-the-scenes look at Stranger Than Heaven, a new intellectual property set against a 1940s noir backdrop with jazz themes. The studio demonstrated motion capture sessions and its creative process during the RGG Direct event.
Sega’s financial outlook suggests that release announcements for these titles could arrive before March 2027. However, given the limited gameplay revealed so far, analysts expect the New Virtua Fighter Project to launch closer to late 2027 or early 2028.
