Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) lecturer Dr. rer. nat. Adi Nur Cahyono, M.Pd., has represented Indonesia at Qatar Math Day, part of the Arab Mathematics Olympiad, highlighting how digital technology can transform mathematics education and make it more engaging for learners.
The international event, held in Doha from November 10–14, 2024, was organized by Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It brought together educators, researchers, and students from across the Arab world for discussions, STEM exhibitions, and workshops on innovative approaches to mathematics teaching.
During his keynote presentation, titled “Learning Math All Around Us in the Digital Age — from Real-World Trails to Immersive Adventures,” Dr. Adi showcased research from the UNNES Centre for Research on Math Trails with Digital Technology (mathtrailslab.id). His team’s work integrates augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, drones, and 3D printing into STEM-based Math Trails—interactive outdoor learning experiences designed to connect mathematical concepts with real-world contexts.
Dr. Adi also led a practical workshop where participants used the MathCityMap platform to design and simulate outdoor math learning routes. One highlight was the creation of the “Desert Sand Dunes Trail” in Qatar, an initiative combining mathematics, digital innovation, and environmental awareness. “We aim to make mathematics not just a subject to learn, but an adventure to experience,” Dr. Adi said during his presentation.
UNNES said the lecturer’s participation demonstrates the university’s growing academic presence on the international stage and its commitment to sustainable, technology-driven education. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education, Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
By integrating immersive digital tools into mathematics instruction, UNNES continues to advance its vision of creating inclusive, globally connected education that inspires innovation and lifelong learning.
