Obsidian Entertainment has no current plans to develop The Outer Worlds 3, according to studio co-founder Chris Avellone. In a post on X dated November 6, Avellone said, “Apparently, aside from DLC plans for The Outer Worlds 2, it seems like Obsidian is making no plans for Outer Worlds 3 (but they are doing Avowed 2).” His remarks come just weeks after the release of The Outer Worlds 2.
The sequel, which launched on October 29 for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, received generally favorable reviews for its expanded freedom-of-choice gameplay and the return of the signature Flaw system. Obsidian is expected to continue supporting the title with updates and downloadable content in the coming months.
Avellone’s statement surprised fans, given the proximity to the sequel’s release. Industry observers, however, note that Obsidian typically manages multiple projects simultaneously and rarely announces long-term plans immediately after a major launch.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Avowed 2 is in development. The first Avowed, released in February 2025, earned a Metacritic score of 80 and became one of Xbox Game Pass’s most-played day-one titles of the year, indicating Microsoft’s confidence in the franchise’s potential.
While fans await clarity on the future of The Outer Worlds, Obsidian appears focused on maintaining post-launch momentum and expanding its fantasy RPG portfolio with Avowed 2, balancing attention between its established and emerging game worlds.
