Instacart and OpenAI have expanded their collaboration with the launch of the first fully integrated grocery shopping and payment app within ChatGPT, enabling users to move from meal inspiration to doorstep delivery without leaving the chat interface. The update connects Instacart’s fulfillment network to OpenAI’s generative models, allowing Cart creation and Instant Checkout inside the chatbot.
The integration makes Instacart the first service to offer checkout directly through ChatGPT using the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The companies said the experience is designed to merge recipe suggestions and contextual conversation with actionable shopping, reducing friction for users who traditionally switch between apps or browsers during grocery planning.

Executives at both firms emphasized that the new feature aims to streamline everyday tasks. Instacart Chief Technology Officer Anirban Kundu said the collaboration “brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most essential parts of daily life: getting groceries to feed your family. Together, we’re creating a seamless and secure way for people to turn simple conversations into real-world action.” Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT, underscored the same idea, saying the update brings users “from meal planning to checkout in a single, seamless conversation.”
The feature automatically surfaces the Instacart app when users ask about food, recipes or ingredients. After connecting an Instacart account, ChatGPT will generate grocery lists, assemble a cart based on local retailers and allow payment without switching tabs. Instacart will fulfill the order through its existing delivery network.

The development builds on years of cooperation between the two firms. Instacart has previously contributed to the OpenAI Operator research preview and currently uses OpenAI APIs, ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI’s Codex in various internal and customer-facing applications. OpenAI counts Instacart among several large corporate partners, including Walmart, Salesforce, PayPal, Target, Thermo Fisher, Morgan Stanley and BBVA.
The companies did not disclose rollout timelines for additional regions or versions beyond the current integration.
