Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a newly announced single-player role-playing game, is not expected to reach players for several years, as development has only recently started, according to industry reporting.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier said the game could be released around 2030, though he warned that the timeline may be optimistic. Commenting on the project’s status, Schreier wrote that “2030 is an optimistic guess,” given that the studio behind the title has only just been formed.

The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games. Arcanaut began assembling its team in 2025, with veteran developer Casey Hudson, who helped create the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, returning as game director.

Some fans had expected news about the long-awaited KOTOR remake at The Game Awards, but instead saw a trailer for a separate Star Wars experience tied loosely to the franchise. Schreier suggested the surprise announcement reflected how early development remains, even raising the possibility that the game could launch on a future console generation.

Long development cycles have become increasingly common for major game releases as budgets and technical demands grow. The Star Wars franchise has seen several high-profile cancellations in the past, while other projects, including the KOTOR remake and Star Wars: Galactic Racer, remain in development amid ongoing uncertainty.
