8849 Tech has opened preorders for its latest rugged smartphone, the Tank X, positioning the device as a niche offering for outdoor and off-grid use with a combination of a large battery, night vision imaging and an integrated high-resolution projector.
The mid-range handset, first unveiled in January, is priced at $549 during an initial launch period, with deliveries expected to begin on March 1. The company says it is shipping from warehouses in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia to limit import fees, while warning that shipments from China could incur additional costs.

A key upgrade over earlier models is the built-in projector, which has been improved from 720p to a 1080p digital light processing system. According to the manufacturer, the projector reaches 220 lumens of brightness, replacing the previous generation’s lower-output unit, and is designed to support outdoor viewing scenarios.
The device is powered by a 17,600mAh battery, which the company says can run the projector for up to five hours at maximum brightness on a single charge. It supports fast charging at up to 120 watts via USB-C and can also be used to charge other devices. Additional features include a rear-mounted camping light rated at up to 1,200 lumens and a 64-megapixel night vision camera supported by four infrared LEDs for shooting in complete darkness.

Beyond its rugged-focused additions, the Tank X offers specifications typical of a mid-range smartphone, including a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 processor, 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. It features a 6.78-inch IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate, measures 1.26 inches thick and weighs about 1.65 pounds, underscoring its focus on endurance and functionality over slim design.
