Square Enix’s upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to become the largest game yet on Nintendo’s Switch 2, with the publisher confirming the title will require more than 100 gigabytes of storage when it launches on June 3. The information emerged following a Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase that also confirmed the game’s release date and pricing.

The Switch 2 version will be distributed on a Game-Key Card and priced at $49.99, but most of the content will still need to be downloaded. At around 102 GB, the installation will consume roughly 75% of the console’s 256 GB internal storage, surpassing January’s Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which already occupies about 90 GB on the same system.

We’re using what we learned from optimizing for the Steam Deck to improve the Switch 2 version as well, including reducing the overall data size.

Square Enix has relied on the Game-Key Card format because the game is too large for standard 64 GB cartridges. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi has previously pointed to technical limits of physical media and platform constraints, saying the team worked to reduce the footprint where possible and describing earlier optimization efforts as “a result of careful tuning across assets and systems.”

Despite the size, the Switch 2 edition remains smaller than versions released on other platforms. The PlayStation 5 and PC releases of Rebirth require roughly 145 GB, reflecting the challenges of compressing the game’s expansive open-world environments and high-resolution assets for more constrained hardware.

The growing storage requirements are likely to push Switch 2 owners toward external MicroSD Express cards, which remain relatively expensive amid tight global supply. With rumors already circulating about a third installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake series as early as 2026, analysts say storage capacity could become an increasingly important consideration for Nintendo and its partners.
