Denza, the luxury vehicle brand owned by BYD, unveiled an upgraded version of its Z9GT on Thursday, introducing improved battery technology and a lower starting price as it seeks to expand its presence in the premium electric vehicle market.

The battery-electric version of the new Z9GT starts at 269,800 yuan ($39,150), marking a reduction of 85,000 yuan, or about 23.96%, compared with the previous model’s starting price of 354,800 yuan.

The updated Z9GT BEV delivers a driving range of up to 1,036 kilometres under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), significantly higher than the 630-kilometre range offered by the earlier version. Denza said the figure represents a new benchmark for pure electric vehicle range.

The model uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery along with the company’s latest ultra-fast flash-charging technology. According to official data, the system enables the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes and from 10% to 97% in around nine minutes.

Alongside the battery-electric model, Denza also introduced a plug-in hybrid electric version of the Z9GT. The hybrid variant is equipped with a 63.8-kWh battery pack and offers a pure electric driving range of up to 401 kilometres, nearly doubling that of its predecessor.

When combined with a full fuel tank, the plug-in hybrid model provides a total driving range of up to 1,301 kilometres, the company said.

The new Z9GT also incorporates several technologies from BYD’s broader vehicle platform portfolio, including the e3 intelligent vehicle control platform, the God’s Eye 5.0 advanced driver assistance system and the DiSus-A intelligent body control system.

Denza was originally established as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz Group. The German automaker exited the partnership in September 2024, leaving Denza as a fully owned subsidiary of BYD.

The upgraded Z9GT is available in five variants. Three battery-electric versions are priced at 269,800 yuan, 299,800 yuan and 369,800 yuan respectively, while two plug-in hybrid variants start at 309,800 yuan and 339,800 yuan.
