Vehicle inspection startup Self Inspection has raised US$10 million in a funding round led by Sheryl Sandberg’s family office, Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, to expand its AI-powered vehicle damage assessment platform.
The San Diego-based company also received backing from U.S. AutoForce, Westlake Financial, Costanoa Ventures, Rebellion Ventures, BrightCap Ventures and DVx Ventures, founded by former Tesla president Jon McNeill.
AI-powered vehicle inspections
Founded in 2021, Self Inspection has developed software that allows users to inspect vehicle damage using only a smartphone camera.
The platform guides users through capturing images of a vehicle before using AI to identify damage, estimate repair costs and generate a detailed inspection report.
According to the company, more than one million vehicle inspections have been completed for rental fleets, finance companies, auctions and automotive marketplaces.
Stellantis Financial Services uses the platform for corporate fleet and lease-end inspections.
Expanding automotive AI
Sheryl Sandberg said the company addresses a large market where vehicle condition data remains fragmented.
“Vehicle condition touches billions of dollars in automotive decisions every year, yet the data remains fragmented. We believe Self Inspection will build the system of record that the automotive industry needs.”
Chief Executive Officer Constantine Yaremtso said the platform compares uploaded images against a large database of damaged vehicles before producing repair estimates and inspection reports. The system can also integrate data from a vehicle’s OBD2 diagnostic system for more detailed assessments.
Self Inspection joins a growing number of startups applying artificial intelligence to automotive services, including vehicle inspections, dealership operations and used vehicle transactions.
