MediaTek Outperform Qualcomm in Global Chip Market

Chipmaker has once again outperformed its competitor, , in the global smartphone market.

At least that’s according to the results of the latest research from market research firm Counterpoint Research which presented a list of the top semiconductor companies in the world based on smartphone chipset shipments for the third quarter of 2021.

In the report, it is stated that MediaTek managed to capture a market share of 40 percent in the third quarter (Q3) 2021.

This figure increased compared to the same period last year (YoY) with a market share of 33 percent, also increased from the second quarter (Q2) 2021 with 38 percent.

Qualcomm itself is behind MediaTek with a 27 percent market share in Q3 2021. Counterpoint Research Graph of the top semiconductor companies in Q3 2021 based on global smartphone chipset shipments.

Counterpoint Research Director Dale Gai said that MediaTek could excel because of their competitive 5G product portfolio in the mid-range segment, coupled with high demand for 4G System-on- (SoC).

“MediaTek’s revenue is also growing gradually thanks to a growing portfolio of chipsets for the upper middle class segment,” said Dale, quoted by KompasTekno from CounterpointResearch, Saturday (12/18/2021).

Although overall MediaTek occupies the top position, however, MediaTek is still not able to outperform Qualcomm in the 5G segment. In the same report, Qualcomm has a 62 percent market share for 5G chip shipments, more than MediaTek’s 28 percent market share.

Counterpoint Research Analyst, Parv Sharma, said that this was due to Qualcomm’s 5G modem chip present in the iPhone 13 Series line, which is powered by the A15 Bionic SoC, in addition to being embedded in the company’s chipset, .

“Qualcomm’s market share in the 5G modem chip market is large because of the iPhone 13 Series and the high demand for their chipsets that already support 5G, ranging from Snapdragon 4 Series to 8 Series,” Sharma explained in the same statement.
