Chinese game development company, Tencent Holdings Ltd. officially acquired the parent of game studio Turtle Rock Studios, namely Slamfire Inc.

Turtle Rock Studios itself is known as a game studio based in California, USA that has released a number of horror survivor games, such as Back 4 Blood, Evolve, and Left 4 Dead.

After falling into the hands of Tencent, Turtle Rock Studios will still operate independently and will still be managed with the same team under the leadership of Phil Robb and Chris Ashton.

Tencent did not release information on the value of the company’s acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios. What is clear, this acquisition will not affect the game Back 4 Blood published by publisher Warner Bros. Games.

President and General Manager of Turtle Rock Studios Steve Goldstein welcomed Tencent’s corporate action.

According to Goldstein, this acquisition will give Turtle Rock Studios an advantage because it can take advantage of Tencent’s extensive experience and network.

“Tencent’s incredible partners, global reach, in-depth knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kind of ambitious games we dream of, while enabling us to maintain our autonomy and independent spirit,” said Goldstein.

Meanwhile, Tencent Games Global Chief Strategy Officer Eddie Chan said he was happy to join Turtle Rock Studios.

Chan explained that together with Turtle Rock Studios, Tencent could take a further approach to the cooperative online game creation process.

“We can’t wait to see what happens next, and we’re excited to be a part of their future,” Chen said as compiled from Business Wire, Wednesday (12/22/2021).

Lately, Tencent has been seen actively acquiring and investing in several companies and studios in the gaming industry.

In addition to Turtle Rock Studios, Tencent has acquired the British game studio, Sumo, and bought a majority stake owned by developer Klei Entertainment.

Tencent also took over minority stakes in game developers Playtonic, Bohemia Interactive, Dontnod, and Remedy Entertainment.

For information, Turtle Rock Studios was first founded in 2002 by Michael Booth. Until 2008, the game studio was finally acquired by Valve.

Turtle Rock Studios was re-founded in 2011 as an independent company by Phil Robb and Chris Ashton.
