After Qualcomm recently introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset for flagship devices, a new rumor has surfaced that the chipmaker has already started working on its next premium chipset. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may already be in development according to information obtained from Weibo. The statement confirms that the possible release date for the new chipset may not be apart from the progress made by MediaTek in the market.

The high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors are now gradually being used by some of the popular phone manufacturers. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 comes with many upgrades and extended capabilities over its predecessors and rivals across the chip industry.

Mobile Chip Masters via Weibo also provided a possible release date for the next Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset in the second quarter of 2022. The tipster specifically mentions May 2022 as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 release date.

Reporting from Gizmochina (22/12), Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to outperform Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, as well as MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 which is also a premium processor. The tipster speculates that Qualcomm is speeding up development of the new chipset in direct response to the Dimensity 9000, though it could also be the Snapdragon Gen 1 batch ported to TSMC amid the global chip crunch.

The leak highlights the intense competition that exists among chipmakers as they continue to seek products that outperform other competitors as durable, efficient and innovative processors.
