The news that AMD will acquire an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) chip company called Xilinx is likely to come true soon. AMD recently officially announced through their official website that the acquisition plan.
The agreement between the two parties will be held on 14 February. The acquisition value is estimated at USD 54 billion.
AMD itself has had the intention to acquire Xilinx since October 2020. And on January 27, 2022, Chinese regulators have given permission for the acquisition.
If the acquisition goes well, it will greatly assist AMD in developing semiconductor technology in the future. Xilinx’s main rival, which is also an FPGA chip manufacturer, Altera, was acquired by Intel in 2015. With the acquisition made by AMD, of course also strengthens the competition between AMD and Intel.
FPGA or Field Programmable Gate Array) is an IC that is often used to implement digital component circuits. The advantage of implementing an FPGA is that it can increase design efficiency by reducing the use of software programming.
For both companies, this acquisition will complement each other as AMD and Xilinx can develop more advanced Cloud, Edge and AI platforms in the future.
