Apple has released watchOS 26, its most extensive Apple Watch software update of the year, alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26 Tahoe. The update is compatible with Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch Ultra, the second-generation Apple Watch SE and newer models. The latest Apple Watch Series 11 ships with watchOS 26 pre-installed.
The software introduces a redesigned interface based on Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” design language. Buttons, widgets and quick settings feature partial transparency, while several apps and animations have been rebuilt. A new Control Center API also enables third-party developers to integrate their apps into the quick settings menu.
Among the most notable health tools is high blood pressure detection, currently limited to Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later versions. These models also gain access to Sleep Score, with Apple stating both features will expand to more devices by the end of September. “Hypertension detection and Sleep Score are not yet available to all users but are expected to be rolled out to all compatible models,” the company said.
Fitness tracking receives an upgrade through Workout Buddy, a feature that provides spoken encouragement during exercise sessions if headphones are connected. The Workout app itself has been redesigned and now integrates Apple Music playlists. Meanwhile, the Smart Stack function has become more adaptive, allowing users to build custom widgets as shortcuts to various apps.
Apple has also added its Notes app to the smartwatch, enabling users to create and sync notes with their iPhones. The update further introduces a new gesture—turning the wrist away—to mute calls, silence alarms, or dismiss notifications, though this capability remains limited to the latest mode.
