Warhammer: Dark Omen, a real-time strategy game first released in 1998, has received a modern update more than 27 years after its debut, addressing technical limitations while leaving its original gameplay intact, according to information published alongside its re-release on GOG.
The cult title, set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer universe, has reappeared following several months on GOG’s Dreamlist, a platform feature that allows users to vote for classic games they want revived. The updated version introduces smoother visuals, 4K compatibility and improved stability on current versions of Windows.

“Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it has undergone a complete graphical overhaul,” the article said, noting that longstanding compatibility issues and bugs affecting modern systems have been resolved. Despite these changes, the core mechanics remain unchanged and reflect design choices typical of late-1990s strategy games.
Early player reviews on GOG have been broadly positive, praising the technical improvements while acknowledging that the gameplay may feel dated by contemporary standards. Warhammer: Dark Omen is currently priced at $8.99 on the platform.
In the game, players assume the role of Commander Morgan Bernhardt, leader of the Grudgebringer mercenary army, and command units including wizards, cavalry, archers, monsters and war machines. Battles take place on fully 3D terrain, where tactics such as positioning and concealment influence outcomes, and campaign paths can change based on player decisions.
