Ratatan, a rogue-like action title from Ratata Arts and TVT Co. Ltd, will arrive on Steam Early Access on September 19, 2025, following a brief delay from its original July release date.
The game is best known for its record-setting Kickstarter campaign in 2023, which raised nearly $1.5 million from 14,598 backers. The project surpassed its ¥20 million ($137,000) target within the first hour, making it the most-funded video game campaign of that year.
That momentum allowed the studio to expand its ambitions, adding a console version and securing collaboration with veteran composer David Wise, whose credits include Donkey Kong Country.
Ratatan has also gained recognition within the industry, winning the top Vermillion Gate Award at Kyoto’s BitSummit indie festival in July. Festival founder James Mielke said: “Ratatan revives the indie spirit once present in Patapon, combining roguelike and rhythm elements with notable polish.”
Beyond awards and funding, Ratatan has drawn attention for its cooperative gameplay, offering four-player online play and large-scale battles with more than 100 characters. Players begin their journey on Rataport island before advancing toward “The Everafter.”
