Dell announced an environmentally friendly laptop design concept called Dell Concept Luna. This laptop is designed to be more durable, easy to disassemble, and easy to repair, reducing the use of resources.

This laptop is made using more circular materials that can be used. This concept was created to test what materials are possible and impossible to produce and sell.

Dell said that if all the ideas from the Concept Luna laptop could be realized, the company could reduce the carbon footprint of Dell products by up to 50%.

“With growing concerns about the climate crisis, e-waste and resource constraints, our question is how we can encourage reuse and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Dell products,” said Glen Robson, Chief Technology Officer, Client. Solutions Group.

Concept Luna, is a laptop designed by Dell’s design team that has a number of “unusual” features. How not, this portable computer is made to make it easier for users to repair and maintain it, so that it becomes a durable laptop.

For example, when a user is forced to replace a broken keyboard or cracked screen. Both components can be removed without the help of a screwdriver or glue heater, because the user simply removes the keystone that holds them in place.

Dell claims, they managed to reduce the number of bolts on the laptop up to 10 times on the Concept Luna. If calculated, there are only four bolts in total to access the internal components as a whole.

That means, the repair time (disassembling, repairing, and reinstalling the main components) only reaches approximately 1.5 hours or 16 times faster than the current service time of similar products.

Not only that, this durable laptop also has a motherboard with a small and compact size. Dell managed to reduce the total size of the motherboard to 75% and reduce the number of components in it by about 20%.

This success cannot be separated from the redesign of the layout of all components by this technology company from the United States. Dell moved the reduced motherboard to the top cover bringing it closer to a larger surface area and exposed to cool air from outside the laptop.

Then, separate the motherboard with the battery charging unit at the bottom to provide better passive heat distribution, which can completely eliminate the need for fanless usage.

All of these efficiencies can significantly reduce total power requirements, paving the way for smaller batteries with deep-cycle cells that remain powerful enough for everyday use.

“It is estimated that the carbon footprint of the motherboard can be reduced by up to 50%,” explains Dell.

In order to maximize the dream of lower carbon emissions in its product line, the Concept Luna laptop is made by Dell using an aluminum chassis that is processed using hydropower. The chassis is built with a stamped aluminum construction requiring less energy and less waste.

“The Concept Luna idea and future developments and other efforts we are undertaking are intended to continue to build on the circular economy leadership that already exists across Dell’s current product portfolio,” concluded Robson.
