Developer Ember Lab has revealed Kena: Scars of Kosmora, a follow-up to Kena: Bridge of Spirits, expanding the story of its Spirit Guide protagonist. The studio said it spent time evaluating its next project after the original game’s release, aiming to preserve the elements that resonated with players while building on development experience gained from the first title.

In the new installment, Kena returns as a more seasoned and widely recognized Spirit Guide. The story follows her journey to the island of Kosmora in search of answers to a lifelong affliction. The island is described as a land shaped by distinct cultures and a tragic history. During her quest, Kena encounters a powerful spirit that shatters her staff, a tool central to her identity and survival.

The loss of her staff forces Kena to adopt a forgotten form of Spirit Guiding that relies on alchemy and elemental manipulation. The sequel introduces elemental spirit companions that travel alongside the player, evolve over time and unlock new abilities as their bond with Kena strengthens. The developer indicated that additional spirits and mechanics will be revealed at a later stage.

Combat and gameplay systems have been expanded to reflect Kena’s growth in skill and capability. New elemental mechanics are intended to add greater strategic depth to encounters, including boss battles, while maintaining the core theme of cleansing corrupted souls.

Ember Lab said its collaboration with PlayStation Studios enabled the creation of a larger world with carefully designed regions and deliberate progression. “Kena: Scars of Kosmora” is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC later this year.
