ERGO and Google Cloud Report Highlights AI’s Role in Preserving Insurance Industry Knowledge

A new report from ERGO, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud, examines how self-evolving artificial intelligence (AI) agents could help insurers capture and preserve institutional knowledge as experienced employees retire and workforce demographics change.

AI Positioned to Preserve Institutional Expertise

Published by the ERGO Innovation Lab, the report explores how adaptive AI agents can capture, organize and scale experiential knowledge—often referred to as “tribal knowledge”—that typically resides with individual employees rather than in formal documentation.

According to the report, much of the insurance industry’s operational expertise is embedded in day-to-day decision-making, work routines and practical experience, making it difficult to retain when employees leave an organization.

The report notes that demographic trends are increasing this challenge. Citing figures from the German Insurance Association (GDV), it says approximately one-quarter of employees in Germany’s insurance sector belong to the baby boomer generation, with many expected to retire over the next five years.

    Self-Evolving AI Agents

The report suggests that self-evolving, or self-improving, AI agents could help organizations preserve institutional expertise over the long term.

Unlike conventional automation tools, these systems are designed not only to perform assigned tasks but also to evaluate and improve their own workflows, decision-making processes and, in some cases, aspects of their architecture over time.

The study also presents an example of an AI-powered content engine and outlines additional applications where adaptive AI agents could support insurers across different stages of their operations.

    Supporting Knowledge Retention

Emilia Dang, Innovation Developer at the ERGO Innovation Lab, said preserving organizational knowledge is becoming increasingly important as workforce demographics evolve.

“The next stage in the development of agentic AI involves not only greater automation, but also how companies preserve, develop and harness knowledge.”

She said organizations without a sustainable knowledge preservation strategy risk losing valuable experience, contextual understanding and decision-making expertise.

“The value of self-evolving agents lies where traditional automation ends: in experience, context and judgement. That is precisely where they can help to systematically capture individual expertise across generations, and transform it into scalable institutional knowledge.”

    Human Oversight Remains Central

Michael Zimmermann, Principal Engineer at Google Cloud, said human oversight remains essential when deploying AI, particularly in highly regulated industries such as insurance.

“In highly regulated industries like insurance, the true power of agentic AI lies in human-guided autonomy.”

He added that combining Google Cloud’s AI infrastructure with ERGO’s insurance expertise provides a framework for preserving institutional knowledge while maintaining appropriate governance and oversight.
