There are growing signs that GTA 6 Online could evolve toward a more MMO-style experience, with features that go beyond the fast-paced, session-based design of the current GTA Online, according to industry commentary and recent corporate moves by Rockstar Games.
The speculation follows comments from veteran game developer Richard Vogel, who has worked on major massively multiplayer titles including Ultima Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic and New World. In an interview with Wccftech, Vogel said he had heard from industry sources that several planned elements for GTA 6 Online resemble mechanics commonly found in MMORPGs.

GTA Online already operates as a persistent digital world, supported by frequent updates, live events and long-term player progression. Vogel suggested Rockstar could expand this foundation by introducing more defined player roles, stronger social systems and a game world that evolves over time, all of which are central characteristics of modern MMO design.
Rumours intensified after Rockstar acquired Cfx.re in August 2023, the developer behind FiveM, a popular GTA 5 modification known for its structured role-playing servers, defined professions and community-driven content. FiveM has, at times, rivalled or surpassed the official GTA Online in player engagement, highlighting demand for deeper role-play experiences within the franchise.

Neither Rockstar nor its parent company Take-Two Interactive has confirmed any plans for GTA 6 Online to adopt MMO-style mechanics. However, Vogel said the direction would be consistent with broader trends in online gaming and Rockstar’s recent investments, noting that the company appears interested in expanding the long-term depth and social structure of its online worlds.
