The developers of Home Assistant have rolled out version 2025.8 of the open-source smart home automation platform, introducing several artificial intelligence-powered features alongside expanded device integration.
The update builds on July’s 2025.7 release, which delivered a new “Ask Question” action and redesigned Area cards. This month’s version introduces an AI Task function designed to analyze files, such as camera footage, and produce text or data outputs. The development team suggested it could be used for tasks like “count[ing] the number of chickens viewed on a smart camera.”
A “Suggest with AI” button has also been added, enabling faster data generation and blueprint sharing. For users of Home Assistant Voice, the platform’s text-to-speech system will now begin generating audio before a chatbot’s full reply is ready, reducing wait times.
Integration support has been expanded with the addition of OpenRouter, giving access to more than 400 large language models, and a Volvo module, allowing users to monitor vehicle battery levels and location. The release also adds compatibility for the YoLink Smart Energy Plug 15A.
Minor interface changes have been made to the Areas dashboard, letting users choose to display a first camera feed, an image, or an icon. Full release notes for version 2025.8 are available on the Home Assistant website.
