Horizon 3 Timeline Questioned as Guerrilla Prioritizes Live-service Title

Report points to Horizon Hunters absorbing much of the studio’s workforce

Fans awaiting the next mainline Horizon game may face a longer wait after new comments from an industry insider suggested Guerrilla Games is heavily focused on a recently announced live-service project. The studio, owned by Sony Group Corp, unveiled Horizon Hunters Gathering as a cooperative multiplayer title for the PlayStation 5, prompting concern that Horizon 3 could be delayed beyond earlier expectations.

The concerns stem from remarks by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who indicated that Horizon Hunters is absorbing a significant share of the studio’s development capacity. Responding to questions about Horizon 3, Schreier said that “most of the studio” is currently working on the multiplayer project, challenging assumptions that only a small team had been assigned to the title.

Horizon 3 is still a ways off according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.

Guerrilla Games has previously confirmed that a third mainline Horizon game is in development but has not provided a release window. The franchise’s earlier releases arrived five years apart, with Horizon Zero Dawn launching in 2017 and Horizon Forbidden West following in 2022. Based on that pattern, some fans had anticipated a new single-player entry as early as 2027.

The reported shift in resources comes as Sony reassesses its broader strategy around live-service games. While titles such as Helldivers 2 have performed strongly, others, including the multiplayer shooter Concord, failed to gain traction. Sony has also cancelled several online-focused projects in recent years, even as it continues to pursue recurring-revenue opportunities through multiplayer and service-based titles.

Despite concerns from fans of the series’ narrative-driven adventures, Horizon Hunters Gathering could offer Sony a longer-term commercial opportunity if it succeeds in the crowded live-service market. However, the uncertainty around Horizon 3 has raised questions about how quickly Guerrilla Games can return its focus to the single-player franchise that helped define the PlayStation brand.
