An independent game studio is openly promoting its use of generative artificial intelligence, presenting the technology as a key attraction rather than something to conceal from players.

Codex Mortis has released a free demo on Steam for a bullet hell game inspired by Vampire Survivors, saying the title was created entirely with AI tools. The studio argues that such technology can help smaller developers produce games with limited resources, even as many gamers remain sceptical of AI replacing human artists.

Some developers have been reluctant to discuss how much generative AI contributes to their projects. Codex Mortis, however, has embraced the approach, with the publisher claiming the game is the “world’s first fully playable game created 100% through AI,” according to Insider Gaming.

That claim is disputed, as other AI-generated gaming experiences already exist, including Oasis, which offers web-based open-world gameplay built with similar technology. These examples have fuelled debate over how to define an AI-made game.

Despite the questions, Codex Mortis says it relied on generative tools at every stage of development, underscoring a broader industry discussion about transparency, creativity and the future role of AI in video game production.
