Nike has introduced Project Amplify, a new powered footwear system designed to support runners and walkers by enhancing their natural movement. Described by the company as the world’s first powered running and walking shoe, the system aims to reduce physical effort while allowing users to move faster and cover greater distances.

The product integrates a lightweight motor, drive belt, and rechargeable cuff battery into a carbon fiber–plated running shoe. Developed in collaboration with robotics firm Dephy, the system can function with or without its powered components. It is supported by motion algorithms from the Nike Sport Research Lab, which analyzed movement patterns to create a more efficient stride experience.

Unlike traditional performance footwear focused on speed optimization, Project Amplify targets everyday athletes who maintain moderate paces between 10- and 12-minute miles. The powered assist is intended to act like an additional muscle group, helping users sustain their pace and reducing the strain of uphill running or extended walking.

The project has undergone extensive testing, with more than 400 athletes participating in trials that generated over 2.4 million recorded steps. Multiple iterations of the hardware have been developed, each refining comfort, power delivery, and integration. Early testers reported smoother stride transitions and a noticeable reduction in exertion during endurance activities.

Project Amplify remains in the testing phase as Nike continues refining the technology before its commercial release. The company views this initiative as part of a broader push into athlete-centered innovation, extending its long-standing commitment to combining sport science, engineering, and design to enhance human performance.
