Nokia’s smartphone business has a positive performance in the third quarter (Q3) 2021.

Based on data from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Nokia’s mobile phone license holder, HMD Global, was recorded to have shipped nearly 3 million units of Nokia smartphones in the third quarter of 2021.

The shipment figure rose 12 percent when compared to the second quarter of 2021 (quater-on-quarter/QoQ), where the number of Nokia mobile phones shipped was 2.7 million units to the global market.

The growth in the number of Nokia smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2021 also looks more significant compared to the third quarter of 2020, which grew to 37 percent.

In the third quarter of 2020, HMD Global was reported to have only managed to ship 2.1 million Nokia smartphones to the global market.

Counterpoint said that Nokia’s positive performance was driven by the market void left by LG Electronics in the Middle East, Africa and North America market regions.

Despite scoring positive growth, Counterpoint noted, Nokia (HMD Global) is still in 14th position as the largest smartphone vendor in the world.

The position of the top five global smartphone vendors in the third quarter of 2021, according to Counterpoint, was occupied sequentially by Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, as summarized by KompasTekno from Nokiamob, Thursday (16/12/2021).

Overall, the global smartphone market recorded a growth of 6 percent compared to the second quarter of 2021 (QoQ), but decreased by 6 percent compared to the third quarter of 2020 (YoY).

Although not competitive in the smartphone market, Nokia has proven to still dominate the feature phone market.

The feature phone itself is a type of cell phone that has the basic functions of calling and sending messages (SMS).

Usually, this feature phone is also equipped with additional features such as a camera, music player, and other features even though they are not as complete and sophisticated as smartphones.

In the third quarter of 2021, Nokia occupies the second position as the leader of the feature phone market share, with total shipments reaching 10 million units of mobile phones to the global market.

If the shipments of smartphones and feature phones are totaled, Nokia managed to send 13 million units of mobile phones in Q3 2021.

With the total number of shipments, Nokia is generally ranked 11th as the world’s largest mobile phone vendor in the third quarter of this year.
