OpenAI has announced a collaboration with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) aimed at preparing U.S. manufacturing for the next generation of AI infrastructure hardware. Under the agreement, OpenAI will share insight into emerging industry hardware needs to guide Foxconn’s design and development work at its U.S. facilities. The press release stated that the arrangement carries no purchase commitments, but OpenAI will have early access to evaluate the systems and an option to buy them.
The companies said the partnership comes as AI capabilities accelerate, creating demand for new classes of specialized data-center equipment. According to the release, combining OpenAI’s understanding of current and future model requirements with Foxconn’s manufacturing scale is intended to strengthen domestic supply chains and speed the rollout of advanced AI systems. The announcement described U.S.-based infrastructure development as “essential to strengthening supply chains and supporting continued American leadership in AI.”

The initiative centers on three areas of work. The first involves jointly designing and engineering multiple generations of AI data-center racks to keep pace with rapid model advances. The second focuses on simplifying and reinforcing the U.S. AI supply chain by adapting rack architecture for domestic production, expanding sourcing to include more U.S. suppliers and increasing localized testing and assembly. The third element calls for Foxconn to manufacture critical components—such as cooling, power, networking and cabling systems—at its U.S. sites.
Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said the company is “thrilled to partner with OpenAI,” calling the organization a leader in the AI era and noting Foxconn’s experience as a major manufacturer of AI data servers. He said the collaboration would support OpenAI’s mission with scalable and trusted infrastructure.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said AI infrastructure represents “a generational opportunity to reindustrialize America,” adding that the partnership is intended to ensure core technologies are built domestically. He said the initiative would bolster U.S. leadership in AI and help distribute the benefits of the technology more broadly.
