OpenAI has launched GPT-5.1, the latest version in its GPT-5 series, introducing improvements in reasoning, instruction-following, and conversational tone. The company said the model represents a significant step toward creating AI that feels both intelligent and natural to interact with. “Great AI should not only be smart but also enjoyable to talk to,” OpenAI stated in its announcement.
The update arrives in two versions: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. The Instant model is designed for quick, everyday exchanges, offering a conversational tone and faster responses. Meanwhile, the Thinking model adapts its reasoning time based on task complexity, providing more deliberate explanations for demanding problems. Both versions are available to ChatGPT users and will be distributed automatically through OpenAI’s internal routing system, which selects the appropriate model for each prompt.

Among GPT-5.1’s main improvements are adaptive reasoning and enhanced instruction-following, allowing it to better interpret user requests such as formatting, tone, and length requirements. Users can now adjust tone presets, including Friendly, Professional, or Candid, and customize how expressive or concise responses should be. According to OpenAI’s internal benchmarks, the model performs better on reasoning and coding tests compared to earlier GPT-5 iterations.
The rollout begins with ChatGPT Pro, Plus, Go, Business, and Edu users, with wider access for free users expected in the coming days. API availability under the designations gpt-5.1 and gpt-5.1-chat-latest will follow shortly, while legacy GPT-5 models will remain accessible for three months. The company emphasized that existing safeguards around responsible AI use will remain unchanged.

The release of GPT-5.1 comes as a course correction following tepid reception for GPT-5, which some users found too rigid. By combining flexibility, clarity, and faster response times, OpenAI aims to restore enthusiasm for its flagship model. “Today’s GPT-5.1 update is a step toward a ChatGPT that fits you—smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and adaptable to your preferences,” the company said.
