Spotify Premium Subscribers Gain Access to Lossless Audio

New feature enhances quality but trails rivals’ higher bitrates

Spotify has launched support for lossless audio streaming, a feature long anticipated by its users and first discussed as early as 2017. The option will be included in the existing Premium plan rather than a higher-priced tier.

“With this update, lossless audio will be available as a part of the regular Premium tier, offering users the ability to stream at up to 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC,” the company said.

The format delivers higher fidelity than standard CD quality, though it falls short of competing services. Apple Music, Qobuz and Tidal all offer up to 24-bit / 192 kHz streaming. Industry analysts note that the difference is minimal for most listeners without specialist audio equipment.

Spotify confirmed the lossless option will work across all devices but must be manually enabled by users on each device. The feature will roll out to more than 50 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and Japan, by October 2025. Notifications will be sent directly to Premium subscribers once the update is available.

The move comes as Spotify continues to compete with rivals on sound quality and service differentiation in the increasingly crowded music streaming market.
