Tesla’s Model Y has become the all-time best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Norway, overtaking Nissan’s Leaf, which had long dominated the Scandinavian market.

According to vehicle registration data, Tesla has sold 81,334 Model Y units since the SUV’s Norwegian launch in 2021, surpassing the Leaf’s 81,230 by a margin of 104 vehicles.

“The Model Y needed only a few years to overtake the former, thereby becoming the fastest car in the nation’s history to reach the top spot,” the report said.

The Nissan Leaf, first introduced in Norway 14 years ago, was an early driver of the country’s transition to electric mobility. The Model Y, however, has benefited from Tesla’s improvements in range, technology and access to the company’s expanding Supercharger network.

Norway continues to lead globally in electric adoption, with nearly 98% of new car sales now electric. Year-to-date in 2025, Tesla has registered 15,093 Model Y sales, far ahead of Toyota’s bZ4X with 5,035 units and Volkswagen’s models with 5,019.

Nissan is preparing to respond with an updated Leaf, expected to launch in Norway later this year.
