TikTok changes algorithm to suit users’ FYP

TikTok announced that it will change the app’s algorithm to match the content of its “For You” feed, also known as FYP, for users. Through the release, says its predictive algorithm can amplify negative experiences by playing videos on topics that are emotionally volatile, such as a breakup.

As is known, TikTok is increasingly popular thanks to the power of its algorithm. This application will recommend videos according to the user’s taste. But at the same time, the algorithm’s tendency to give users more topics of interest can lead to negative results, if those things of interest can have a negative impact.

TikTok gives an example, a user who recently broke up with their partner can be flooded with breakup videos on their FYP that can amplify negative emotions. This is a problem that other social networking platforms are currently struggling with, and cannot be solved effectively.

“We’re also working to recognize if our systems may inadvertently recommend only very limited types of content which, while not violating our policies, could have a negative effect if the bulk of the content someone watches, such as content about loneliness or weight loss. Our goal is for everyone’s For You feed to feature a wide variety of content, creators, and topics,” the TikTok team said.

TikTok will now also expand its curation features with new tools to help people customize their feeds. Good for vegetarians who want to see a few meat recipes or a very busy worker, who wants to find beauty tutorials, according to TikTok. However, it is not yet known when this new algorithm will be available.
