Twitter stops advertising and recommendation features in Ukraine and Russia

Twitter has temporarily suspended ads from showing in Ukraine and One of several steps the company is taking to highlight safety information and minimize risks associated with the conflict in Ukraine.

“We are temporarily pausing advertising in Ukraine and Russia to ensure more important public safety information,” the company wrote in an update also shared in Ukraine.

Twitter did not indicate how long this action would take, but said it was part of the ongoing work to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We are actively monitoring the risks associated with the conflict in Ukraine, including identifying and judging false and misleading information,” the company said.

The company adds that it directs users to Moments and Events curated by its editorial team to provide additional context on what is happening in Ukraine. Researchers have warned that misinformation about Ukraine will continue to flood platforms.

Twitter said the move also prevented popular profile accounts from being hacked. “We actively monitor vulnerable high-profile accounts, including journalists, activists, officials and government agencies to mitigate any attempted expropriation or targeted manipulation.” The company’s move comes one day after Facebook announced that it was enabling a one-click “profile lock” tool for Ukrainians to help users there secure their personal information.
