Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has reaffirmed its leadership in sustainability by climbing to 32nd place worldwide in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings while maintaining its fifth position nationally. The milestone underscores the university’s steady progress in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on education, sustainable communities, and climate action.
The award was formally presented to Prof. Dr. Amin Retnoningsih, M.Si., Head of the UNNES Conservation Subdirectorate, at the UI GreenMetric National Ranking Award Ceremony held on December 17, 2024, in Bandung. The achievement, she said, is the result of shared dedication across the university.
“This achievement is not the result of one individual’s effort, but a reflection of the collective hard work of the entire UNNES academic community,” said Prof. Amin. “We truly appreciate the dedication and commitment from all parties that enabled UNNES to remain in the national Top 5 and move up to 32nd globally. This embodies the spirit of our conservation campus.”
Prof. Amin added that UNNES remains committed to strengthening its conservation programs and expanding green initiatives aligned with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Rector Prof. Dr. S. Martono, M.Si., said the improvement in rankings reflects the university’s rising international profile in sustainability. “Our rise in the global ranking shows that UNNES’s sustainability initiatives are gaining international recognition. We will continue to drive forward green innovations to build a more sustainable future,” he said.
The UI GreenMetric assessment measures universities’ environmental and social impact across six indicators: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education and research. The 2024 evaluation covered a six-month period from May to October.
With its mission to integrate conservation principles across education, research, and community engagement, UNNES continues to develop initiatives that align academic growth with environmental responsibility. The university said the latest recognition reinforces its vision to become a world-class institution grounded in sustainability and innovation.
