U.S.-based security technology company Verkada on Thursday announced a suite of new AI-powered safety tools designed to help schools strengthen campus security, improve emergency response, and streamline investigations.
“With these updates, Verkada is enabling schools to leverage AI as a force multiplier for campus safety, delivering greater clarity into incidents, better real-time alerts, and improved communication tools,” said Abraham Alvarez, Vice President of Product at Verkada. “By integrating investigation, alerting, and communication into one secure platform, schools can better protect their students, staff, and campuses.”
The update includes several new capabilities across Verkada’s security platform, including what the company calls its AI-Powered Unified Timeline, a feature that allows school security teams to visually reconstruct the movement of a person or vehicle across campus with a single click. Rather than manually reviewing hours of footage from multiple cameras, users can generate a map-based timeline of events within seconds. Verkada said the feature is designed to assist in investigations involving missing students, suspicious behavior, or coordinated emergency response.
The company also expanded its AI-Powered Alerts to help schools detect potential threats before they escalate. The new Activity Detection Alerts distinguish between routine movement, such as students walking, and higher-risk behaviors like climbing fences or slip-and-fall incidents. Another addition, K-12 Industry-Specific AI Alerts, offers pre-configured notifications for common school-related scenarios, such as identifying a person with a fully covered face or detecting emergency service vehicles on campus.
Verkada further introduced AI-enhanced communication tools within its intercom systems. The new Live Captions feature automatically transcribes calls on Verkada Desk Station and the Pass App (iOS), with support for multiple languages including Spanish, French, German, Hindi, and Japanese. Additionally, the AI-Generated Messages tool allows administrators to create professional audio responses from typed text for use during after-hours, lockdowns, or emergencies.
According to the company, these capabilities mark a shift from reactive monitoring to proactive safety management, enabling faster investigation of incidents and more intelligent alerting. Verkada emphasized that the tools comply with district-approved privacy standards and are designed to support diverse school communities through accessible communication.
