SEGA has released the first official gameplay trailer for its upcoming Virtua Fighter Project, offering a minimalist look at the franchise’s next installment. The footage showcases a duel between characters Akira Yuki and Stella in a barebones environment, emphasizing technical combat over visual flair.
Released on August 4, the trailer is devoid of HUD elements and background music, drawing attention to the game’s mechanics and animations. According to SEGA, further details about the title will be unveiled during Tokyo Game Show 2025, scheduled to run from September 25 to 28.
The minute-long video marks the first public display of actual gameplay following a teaser released in January, which was described as “pre-development engine footage.” Fans have since speculated about the project’s visual direction, with some noting a lack of graphical polish. SEGA, however, appears focused on maintaining the “realistic yet fluid technical combat mechanics” that defined the original 1993 title.
SEGA confirmed last year that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, best known for its narrative-heavy Yakuza series, is leading development. The studio is concurrently working on Stranger Than Heaven, an open-world game set across early 20th-century Japan.
An official title and release date for the new Virtua Fighter Project have not been announced, though industry speculation suggests a potential release in summer 2026.
In the meantime, SEGA is preparing to launch Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage on October 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for a later date.
