The 2025 Tesla Model Y has once again been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+, marking the seventh consecutive year the electric SUV has earned the institute’s highest safety designation.

The accolade highlights Tesla’s continued emphasis on vehicle safety amid the growing popularity of battery electric vehicles. According to Tesla China’s announcement on social media platform Weibo, the Model Y scored top marks in key IIHS categories, including occupant protection and crash avoidance systems.

The IIHS, a U.S.-based independent organization, conducts comprehensive evaluations using crash tests such as frontal offset, side impact, rollover, and rear-impact scenarios. Vehicles are rated on a scale from Good to Poor, with the Top Safety Pick+ designation reserved for those meeting the highest standards across multiple tests.

The Model Y’s strong safety performance has been recognized by various international agencies. In addition to the IIHS rating, the vehicle has previously received top safety scores from the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI), Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

The continued safety accolades come as the Model Y maintains its position as the world’s best-selling battery electric vehicle. According to AutoVista24, the SUV accounted for 10.9% of global BEV sales in 2024, further solidifying its market dominance.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the rating in a reposted comment on X, referring to the Model Y’s safety status.
