OpenAI Targets Short Video Market with New AI Platform

Identity verification tool to allow users to personalize content

OpenAI is preparing to launch a short video platform that could rival TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, according to a Wired report. Unlike existing services, the new app would only allow AI-generated content.

The platform is expected to rely on OpenAI’s Sora 2 video generation model and initially restrict clips to 10 seconds. Users would reportedly be able to upload their likeness through an identity verification tool, enabling personalized video creation. Standard features from short-form platforms, such as remixing existing content, are also planned.

The AI-only model could allow OpenAI to refine future versions of its video tools while keeping content contained within the app. This approach may reduce reliance on external editing applications, such as ByteDance’s CapCut.

The report noted that copyright issues may emerge, as rights holders would need to actively opt out to prevent their material from appearing on the platform. This could create uncertainty for creators and organizations in the early stages.

OpenAI has not publicly commented on the project. Wired suggested the company may begin with an invite-only launch to limit demand and focus on selected markets, given the high computing resources required for AI video generation.
