Samsung has opened a beta program for an upgraded version of Bixby, redesigning the assistant to function as a conversational device agent aimed at simplifying how users interact with Galaxy smartphones.

The update allows users to make requests in natural language to manage device settings and features, removing the need to navigate menus or remember specific command names. Samsung said the assistant can interpret intent and take action directly within the device interface.

“Since we introduced our first AI phone in 2024, we’ve been committed to making them easier to use so more people can benefit from AI — that’s why we decided to integrate a device agent directly into the experience,” said Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. He added that the company redesigned Bixby to enable more natural interactions and intuitive device control, reducing friction in everyday tasks.

Samsung said the updated assistant can assess a device’s current settings and suggest solutions based on context, potentially reducing trial and error for users unfamiliar with certain features. For example, the assistant can adjust display or touch-protection settings when prompted with a description of an issue rather than a specific command.

The new version of Bixby also includes real-time web search functionality, allowing it to retrieve up-to-date information from the open web and display results directly within its interface instead of redirecting users to a separate browser or app. Samsung said this approach is designed to create a more seamless experience when searching for information such as travel or accommodation options.

The beta update is available with One UI 8.5 in select markets, including Germany, India, South Korea, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Samsung said broader expansion is planned at a later date.
