Garmin has begun rolling out system software version 5.09 for its Descent X50i dive computer, introducing new security and functionality features along with several bug fixes.
The update arrives roughly four months after the previous system software version 4.05 and adds support for a device passcode, a feature Garmin began introducing to its wearables earlier in 2025. According to the company, the passcode tool enhances device security but does not prevent a dive from starting.
System software 5.09 also provides additional information about paired devices, including details about the connection type used by connected accessories. Garmin said the update improves pairing stability with the Descent S1 buoy, a companion device used for diver communication and tracking.
The update also expands customization options for dive monitoring. Users can now add Essential data fields to custom dive screens, including metrics such as current depth, stop depth and no-decompression limit (NDL) time. Other additions include the ability to display tank volume on the pre-dive check page and set a custom startup message on the device splash screen.
Garmin said the update includes multiple bug fixes addressing issues affecting pool mode, SubWave messages and dive log functionality.
According to a company forum post, system software 5.09 had reached approximately 20% of Descent X50i users at the time of publication. The company has not specified when the rollout will be completed.
Users can manually check for the update directly on the device through the settings menu or via the Garmin Dive app and Garmin Express software.
