Rivian appears set to phase out the Dual Standard versions of its R1 electric pickup and SUV as the company prepares for the launch of its next-generation model, the Rivian R2.
The automaker recently informed customers via email that the “Dual Standard is ending,” signaling that the entry-level battery variants of the Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S may soon be removed from the lineup.
Currently, the R1S Dual Standard starts at $76,990 and offers an estimated 270 miles (435 km) of driving range. The higher-spec R1S Dual version begins at $83,990 and features a larger battery pack that extends range to 329 miles (529 km).
The R1T Dual Standard pickup has the same 270-mile range but starts at $72,990, while the upgraded R1T Dual variant begins at $79,990.
Rivian has not provided a detailed explanation for the potential change but confirmed that adjustments to its product lineup are forthcoming.
“We have changes coming to our vehicle lineup later this year,” the company said, adding that customers interested in the Dual Standard versions should order one “while you can.”
The company is also promoting leasing offers for the models. Rivian said leases for the R1T and R1S Dual Standard versions start at $749 per month for 36 months, with a $3,000 incentive available for vehicles ordered by March 19. The offer requires $5,644 due at signing, excluding a $1,895 destination fee.
The expected phase-out comes as Rivian prepares to unveil the R2, an electric SUV expected to start at around $45,000. Analysts and industry observers have suggested the lower-priced model could attract buyers who might otherwise consider the R1 lineup.
Reducing the number of R1 variants could also help Rivian streamline production at its assembly facility in Normal, Illinois, while creating clearer pricing separation between the R1 and R2 models.
The R2 is scheduled to debut on March 12, marking a key step in Rivian’s strategy to expand into more affordable electric vehicles.
