Tekken 8 Switch 2 Port Remains Possible, Director Suggests Business Case

Bandai Namco’s Tekken 8 could potentially arrive on the recently launched Switch 2, although no formal plans have been announced. A port of the fighting game to the new handheld console would mark the first Tekken title to run on a Switch platform.

Tekken 8, released in January last year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, would face technical challenges in adapting to the Switch 2’s hardware, according to game director Katsuhiro Harada. The Switch 2, launched in June, has demonstrated strong performance capabilities, making a port feasible from a technical standpoint.

Harada noted that the idea is “an interesting option, and not totally off the table,” emphasizing that a Switch 2 release could expand the game’s audience. He added that such a move would make sense from a business perspective but acknowledged the significant development effort required to bring the game to the handheld.

To date, no Tekken title has been released on a Switch family console. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was previously launched for the Wii U in 2012, representing the only Tekken game on a Nintendo system. Observers point to recent high-profile games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy successfully running on the Switch 2 as an indication that the hardware is capable of supporting demanding AAA titles.

While Bandai Namco has not confirmed a Switch 2 version, the discussion highlights the growing interest in bringing popular console franchises to Nintendo’s latest hardware, potentially expanding the reach of the Tekken series to a broader player base.
