Tesla has disclosed details on customer adoption of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) package for the first time, offering a clearer picture of demand for the optional driver assistance system.

Speaking on Jay Leno’s Garage, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, said the take rate is “increasing a lot.” He added that adoption has moved from “less than 10 percent” to what he described as “the teens,” with about half of Model S and Model X buyers choosing the upgrade.

The company has previously kept sales figures for FSD vague, with Chief Executive Elon Musk only hinting they were “much higher” than outside estimates suggested. Analysts often relied on third-party trackers and regional data to gauge demand.

Moravy’s comments suggest FSD adoption is strongest among Tesla’s premium customers, while more affordable models such as the Model 3 and Model Y show lower uptake.

Tesla has recently promoted free trial periods and expanded availability to new markets, measures that could further influence adoption rates. However, it remains unclear whether these efforts will drive broader demand as the technology continues to evolve.
