ByteDance is exploring autonomous driving technologies as part of its broader artificial intelligence research, according to a report by Chinese technology outlet 36Kr.
The report said the work is being carried out by the world model team within ByteDance’s Seed AI division, which is researching capabilities such as environmental perception, prediction and planning for potential autonomous driving applications.
ByteDance said the effort is part of its early-stage physical AI research and not a commercial smart driving initiative.
“Our frontier large-model exploration areas include physical AI, where there are many early-stage research efforts and explorations, but we have no plan to build a smart driving business.”
The company already supplies AI technologies for intelligent cockpit systems through its cloud platform, Volcengine. According to the report, advances in world models could also support future embodied AI and robotics research.
